Roy Knapp's Drumset early 1920s through the 1930s Roy C. Knapp had a long and illustrious career as a performer and teacher in the Chicago area, beginning in 1910. He was inducted into the PAS Hall of Fame in 1972. A single-tension 12" x24" bass drum from the 1920s and a 6 1/2" x 14" wodden-shell snare are the foundation of Knapp's drumset. The separate-tension snare, with eight tube lugs, is one of the earliest produced by the W.F.L. Company, founded in 1937. The set includes four Chinese tom-toms (ranging in size from 3"x6" to 9"x 12"), a pair of copper-shell timbales, a handmade "snowshoe" pedal (a forerunner of the modern hi-hat), and numerous woodblocks, cowbells, temple blocks, triangles, and cymbals. The temple blocks and smaller Chinese toms are richly decorated. The set also features a unique, double bass pedal that allows Knapp to play just the bass drum or both the bass drum and the vertically attached cymbal. Both pedals were made by Ludwig & Ludwig Donated by James L. Knapp PAS Museum Exhibit Label |
