Additional Research |
This highly ornate drum, measuring 17" x 14", was manufactured by Ludwig & Ludwig in Chicago, Illinois, most likely in the 1920s. The drum has hoops inlaid with pearl, double-tension tube lugs, and three hand-painted scenes on the shell. Although the paint has deteriorated, one can tell that each scene depicted some type of Renaissance setting. The strainer is of simple design that does not allow the snares to be turned off. Percussive Notes, December 1998. Ludwig & Ludwig Presentation Drum Chicago c. 1926 Ludwig's popular street drum - with seperate-tension tuning, post-type snare strainer, wood counterhoops, and mahogany shell - was especially recommended for drum corps use. Their presentation drums were created "in about any degree of elaborateness desired" from the basic street drum design. This 12" x17" presentation drum features four hand-painted scenes depicting pastimes of the priveleged classes, in a sentimental eighteenth-century French pastoral style. Because the paint and warnish are flaking badly on most of these medallions, some of the painter's preliminary pencil sketches are now visible. The counterhoops are decorated with a band of inlaid veneers, set off with black purfling, and mother-of-pearl discs. Donated by Velma Lee Williams One original tuning pin hook on the batter-head counterhoop has been replaced by a later model. PAS Museum Exhibit Label |
