Description |
Tubaphone bells, steel 1/8" pipe in unpainted wooden case. Two octaves plus Low B. Tubes rest on red felt and in wooden cradle. Held to cradle by nail inserted through hole in back of tube. Tubes stamped with notes. Naturals and accidentals rest on separate removable wooden trays. Case holds naturals, lid holds accidentals. Brass bolts hold trays in position and hold case closed for transport. Case has green felt glued to bottom. Lid has scratches and a water ring. Inside lid, in gold-leaf paint, script "HAWKES + SON, SENNIAN ST. PICCADILLY CIRCUS AND AT ALDERSHOT, LONDON." Two pieces of 1 inch wide red rubber padding have been glued over part of "LONDON." Case dry, brittle, fragile but tubes in excellent condition. |

Originally called a tubuscampanophone, the tubaphone was designed in England before World War I to complement the four-row wooden xylophone.
